SEALANTS

Protect against decay.

Brushing Teeth

Although brushing and flossing removes most of the food and plaque from the smooth surfaces of your teeth, it's difficult to completely clean all the rough surfaces. Sealants help protect those areas by creating a barrier over the areas where a toothbrush cannot reach.

Dental sealants are a thin coating that is painted on the chewing area of your teeth. As the coating dries, it creates a hard surface on your teeth that smooths out the rough surfaces. Once treated, these teeth are less likely to develop decay.

Typically, sealants are applied to children’s teeth, but under certain circumstances, adults can also choose this treatment. Once the sealants are applied, they will usually last between three to five years. If you have questions about whether sealants are right for you or your child, talk to your Southdale Dental Associates dentist or hygienist during your next appointment.
